I have been performing in the Kiwanis Music Festival since I was 5 years old. After having a few years off because of covid, this year it was extra special because I had extra performance opportunities at the highlights concert, the 50th anniversary concert, then I also got to go to provincials in Niagara Falls.
Having the opportunity to perform in front of people and to get constructive feedback has been especially important in developing my skills as a singer. I now perform locally with my band “The Garvin Brothers”, and I plan to continue performing for the rest of my life!

I am 8 years old and have been studying the violin for 5 years using the instruments that my father trained with over 30 years ago. This was my first time taking part in the Kiwanis Music Festival. It was exciting and I really enjoyed meeting the other performers and listening to their pieces. Being selected to perform in the Provincials, I also had to prepare a recording for the virtual festival. I preferred performing in front of the live audience so that I could see their reaction and hear their applause. Seeing the results of the festival made me feel immensely proud of my hard work. I have learned a great deal about how to dynamically perform a piece of music and this has helped me in all of my performances to this day!

I have performed in the Kiwanis Music Festival for four years playing piano solos and duets. It was a great experience to perform at the Highlights Concert and Provincials this year. It provides me with the opportunity to show my hard work and also gives me a chance to learn from other performers. I like playing duets with Christine because it increases the dynamic range.

It is wonderful to have an opportunity to share my experience placing 3rd in provincials and performing in the Highlights Concert! It is fantastic! I really enjoyed listening to other performers’ masterpieces. The exposure of playing duets is a massive learning opportunity that I certainly did not want to miss! I had a chance to meet someone new, learn from different perspectives, and the best part was to have fun! The Kingston Kiwanis Music Festival does a great job incorporating those learning skills altogether!
Our vision is to foster an interest in music and related performing arts in Kingston and its surrounding area.
The Kingston Kiwanis Music Festival has taken place every year since 1973. Over the years it has evolved to keep pace with changes in the music scene, participants’ preferences, teachers’ requests, and requirements for participation in the Ontario Music Festival Association provincial competitions. But the basic vision, mission, and values of the Festival have remained the same.
Our mission is to organize and promote an annual amateur music festival for musicians and other performing artists living in Kingston and the surrounding area.
We encourage participation at all age levels with an emphasis on young performers. Our focus is on the performance and knowledge of classical music, speech arts, classical voice, popular music, and music theatre.
Our festival provides participants with feedback from expert adjudicators from outside our community to encourage excellence and to bring new ideas to this area.
We see the festival as an important step in the education of participants in their journey towards excellence in performance.
The Kingston Kiwanis Music Festival, founded by the Kiwanis Club of Kingston, is now a standalone charitable organization to benefit our community without gain for its members.
